Last Things

Death, judgment, resurrection, and the age to come

Orthodoxy confesses Christ's return, the resurrection of the dead, judgment, and the life of the age to come, while distinguishing dogma from pious opinion.

01

What the Church teaches

The Church confesses that Christ will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, that the dead will rise, and that His Kingdom will have no end. Christian hope is bodily resurrection and life in the age to come.

02

The biblical witness

Christ teaches that those in the tombs will hear His voice. St Paul builds the Christian hope on Christ's resurrection as the firstfruits. Revelation ends not with escape from creation, but with the renewed creation and the heavenly Jerusalem.

03

The councils & the Fathers

The Creed and the Fathers speak firmly where the Church has spoken: Christ's return, judgment, resurrection, and eternal life. Some later details are treated as theologoumena or pious opinion, not dogmatic definitions.

04

Why it matters

Eschatology keeps Christian life sober and hopeful. Death is an enemy Christ has conquered. Judgment is real, but the final word for the faithful is communion with God, resurrection, and the healing of creation.

05

Common misunderstandings

Orthodoxy does not build its faith around speculative end-times charts. It also does not dogmatize every image found in later spiritual literature, such as the toll-houses debate. Where the Church has not defined, the site should speak carefully.
