Sola Fide

Orthodoxy rejects works-righteousness, but also rejects any account of faith severed from love, repentance, sacramental life, and perseverance.

Rival Claim

The Protestant claim

A person is justified by faith alone, apart from works, so good works are fruit of salvation but not part of the believer's justification before God.

Faith working through love

Orthodoxy teaches salvation by grace, not by self-powered achievement. Repentance, baptism, Eucharistic life, and obedience are not competitors with grace; they are the life of grace in the person being healed.

The New Testament refuses to isolate faith from love and living obedience. James explicitly says a person is justified by works and not by faith alone, while Paul speaks of faith working through love and commands believers to work out salvation because God is at work in them.
