Orthodoxy.Church

Sola Scriptura

Orthodoxy receives Scripture as inspired and authoritative within the apostolic Tradition that preserved, interpreted, and canonized it.

Rival Claim

The Protestant claim

Scripture alone is the only infallible rule of faith, so the Church must test all traditions by the Bible rather than treating tradition as a second authority.

01

Scripture within Holy Tradition

Orthodoxy does not place Scripture beneath custom or opinion. Scripture is inspired, read constantly in the services, and norming for the Church's doctrine.

The issue is the word alone. The New Testament itself commands Christians to hold apostolic tradition delivered by word and letter, and calls the Church the pillar and ground of the truth. The Bible did not arrive with a self-authenticating table of contents; the Church received, guarded, and interpreted the canon inside her worshiping life.
