The Visible Church and Apostolic Succession

The Church is not an invisible idea loosely gathered around private interpretation, but a visible Eucharistic body with apostolic teaching, bishops, and sacramental communion.

Rival Claim

The Protestant claim

The true Church is the invisible fellowship of all real believers, so institutional succession and historic bishops are not necessary marks of Christ's Church.

01

A historical body, not only an invisible category

Christ founded a Church that can teach, bind and loose, baptize, gather at the Eucharist, and preserve apostolic doctrine. The Church has an invisible depth, but she is not merely invisible.

The earliest post-apostolic witnesses point to the bishop, presbyters, deacons, Eucharist, and public apostolic teaching as the recognizable shape of the Church. Apostolic succession is not magic; it is the historical continuity of the Church's faith, worship, and ordained oversight.
